In the hollow of a valley in the Perche, a hamlet of four buildings gathered around a courtyard, a mill more than six hundred years old, a stream crossing two hectares. The place was found in January 2020 and taken on straight away, during the first lockdown, to become a holiday house let as a whole. The intention held in three words: a place stripped back, right, and simple in the best sense.
The existing structure supplied the answer. Rather than opening up at all costs, self-contained suites were drawn from what the plan already offered, each linked to a common room, as far as the sheepfold converted over two levels. Large arches mark boundaries without separating and let light in from several sides at once, which gives the dining room its standing as the central space.
The walls are off-white, wood comes as a counterpoint, and a collection of marbles gathered from across France passes from room to room. The mosaic floors were laid by hand. In the sheepfold bathroom, a shell basin stands out against green tiles. The furniture was found piece by piece, without anything looking arranged.
