A 19th-century hôtel particulier in Neuilly-sur-Seine, divided into apartments in the 1970s. A garden, the Bois de Boulogne a short walk away. The brief was about use: that the apartment should be lived in like a family house, open, moving easily from one level to the garden. The plan was entirely reworked, ten months of building.
The kitchen changed place and was redrawn to measure, around an island in lacquered Macassar ebony and a top in enamelled lava stone. So as not to close it off, three arches were opened in the wall, two of them pivoting mirrors that turn the perspectives and the light. This was the first project in which the studio used this lacquered wood; it has stayed in its vocabulary.
The duplex reads over two levels. Below, the children's bedrooms, a playroom, a cinema room and a study; above, the living room and the main bedroom, with the same view of the garden from both floors. The envelope stays quiet, marble, wood and zellige, and lets the living room mix inherited works, pieces found at auction and the studio's own, among them the Podium sofa in emerald green velvet. The children's floor takes the colour. One enters an old house set inside a contemporary shell, with a patina it seems always to have had.
