RESIDENTIAL · Paris, Le Marais · 2020 · 60 m² · Renovation of a duplex under the roof
Sixty square metres under the roofs of the Marais, four and a half metres of ceiling height and a vast skylight. The apartment had already been renovated and turned into a loft, but the upper level could only be reached by a ladder and the cubic volume had no character. Faced with the lack of surface, the reflex would have been to empty the space to gain ground.
The studio did the opposite and occupied the volume. A sculptural staircase in curved stained oak winds up at the centre of the room like a wave, rises towards the skylight and takes the full height. It gives structure without partitioning: the kitchen, the living room and the dining room each find their own footing around it, without losing the link to the mezzanine bedroom.
Everything else is held back, monochrome white and the pale tone of wood. A double oak bench sits in the corner of the main room, with a banded back and an integrated shelf, under the Fly Gaby wall light. The kitchen tucks under the staircase, with white cupboards, notched wooden handles drawn for it, and a travertine worktop and splashback; the Drinking tray and the Smoking ashtray sit there. Upstairs, a screen-bookcase in stained oak lets the eye through. The bathroom allows itself a floral tile.
