The top two floors of a building on the Avenue Matignon, entirely refurbished, for an American law firm. Four thousand square metres in the sky, a short walk from the Champs-Élysées, with a view across the whole of Paris. The brief lay in a gap: leave the ordinary office floor behind and give these surfaces a residential bearing, privacy and refinement where open plan is expected.
The façade had no particular quality. A second skin of oak runs all the way round it and settles two questions at once: it gives the floor its envelope, and it frames the views, which stop being a continuous panorama and become a series of pictures. Stone runs underfoot, below the wood, and brings the calm the place needed.
Reception states the case: a bench cut from stone, and a kidney-shaped desk in mirror-polished stainless steel. All the furniture was drawn for the place, down to the meeting rooms. Art holds a real place rather than a decorative one, including a light installation by Odile Soudant. The large terrace opens onto the roofs of Paris and the dome of the Grand Palais.
