RESIDENTIAL · Paris, Avenue Montaigne · 2023 · 230 m² · Full renovation of a Haussmann apartment
On the edge of the Golden Triangle, a Haussmann apartment near the Avenue Montaigne. It had just been done up and had lost its mouldings and cornices in the process, replaced by marble and gilding. The owner, a collector, bought it and made her decision: strip it all out and start again. What remained was to give it back its charm without copying what no longer existed, and to keep large free walls for the works.
Usually the studio entrusts the through-line to wood. Here the works had too much presence for a discreet material to hold: straw marquetry takes the role. It covers a large sliding double door, treated as a piece in its own right, then the entrance, the round vestibule, a bedroom wall and the furniture drawn by Richard Peduzzi. The mouldings return, half Haussmann and half Art Nouveau, and the herringbone parquet is laid at a larger scale.
The kitchen goes elsewhere, bubble-gum pink and green, arranged around a floral Doric column imposed by a drainpipe. The bar is by Hervé Van der Straeten, and the Drinking tray and Smoking ashtray sit on it. In the sauna, a honey-wood daybed answers the straw. Above the dining room, a blue ceramic fireplace by Sarah Crowner.
